A Goverment in Paralysis

The government solution is usually as bad as the problem

1.     What is the story behind the wall?

Over the last few years, thousands of immigrants have crossed the border to the United States illegally. Some might call this a national crisis. The immigrant crisis first began in 2014 when illegal immigrants came from Guatemala. Now, however, most of the people entering the States are citizens of Mexico who are hoping to build a new life in ‘The Land of Opportunities’. These are the so-called Dreamers. The problem is that, according to the forty-fifth president: Donald Trump, these dreamers take the jobs from US citizens and in addition, that they bring their problems with them. Problems are, for instance, drugs, alcoholism, sex crimes, homicides etc. Therefore, the current administration wishes to build a wall between the two nations in order to keep the Mexicans from crossing the border illegally.

2.     Why is the wall important?

It can be argued that the wall is significant because illegal immigrants from Mexico is behind approximately 4.000 homicides and 30.000 sex crimes. These are high numbers and it is understandable that the president and his administration is aiming to protect their citizens.

3.     What is a government shutdown? Is this the first time this happens?

A government shutdown is the result of Congress unapproving a federal budget, for instance, the defence budget. This causes multiple functions of the U.S government to close until a budget is agreed upon. Some of the functions can’t close such as firefighters. A shutdown has been issued before, during the Reagan administration. During President Ronald Reagan there were eight different shutdowns all not lasting longer than four days at most. The shutdown today was called for because Congress did not approve of different federal budgets because they wish to use money from these budgets to build the wall.

4.     Are there any similarities to the building a wall along the Mexican border and Brexit?

One of the main reasons that Brexit was approved was because the citizens of Great Britain fear the immigration that being a member of the Eu would bring. Therefore, it is possible to link the wall that President Trump wants to build in order to keep immigrants away from the States to Brexit. Both of these ideas/conflicts were made because of fear of immigration.

5.     Who is affected by this shutdown?

Everyone who works in government functions is affected. People who work here are either not allowed to go to work or has to work. The problem is that none of these people is getting paid because the money is given to fund the border wall.

6.     What does the “Buck stops with me” mean.

It is a saying that says that the boss stops the blaming and takes the full responsibility.
